With this exhibit, the North Carolina Century University Art Museum aimed to call attention to an extraordinary group of quilters, who are actually artists, whose handcrafted objects show a mastery of form and textures in applique and patchwork quilts. The Museum was grateful that more than thirty wonderfully creative and talented quilters were willing to share their artistry with the university family, greater Durham, the Research Triangle community and the state of North Carolina. These quilters employ both experimental and traditional techniques and sometimes summon a reevaluation of the definition of art. Their collective expressions in more than 60 quilts are so masterfully shaped and exhibit such unique expressions of their makers, that the aesthetic quality takes precedence over any functional purpose.
