Andrea Carter

Andrea Carter is a business owner and fiber artist whose work offers a celebration of her lifelong sartorial practice. Her work is an evolving showcase of learning that includes one-of-a-kind, contemporary wearable art pieces and quilted wall hangings using, for the most part, vibrant, colorful Ankara and other African textiles.

Andrea has been sewing apparel for over 50 years and recently rediscovered quilting during the COVID pandemic determined to complete a hand sewn quilt she had started close to 40 years prior.

In 2023 Andrea joined the African American Quilt Circle of Durham and was immediately inspired by the artistry of the members who welcomed and encouraged a passion she didn’t know she had. They also dispelled some preconceived notions of what quilting was or could be. She is excited to interpret learned techniques through cultural points of view and lived experiences.
Andrea’s quilt work pays tribute to stories, memories and knowledge (in mostly linear and geometric abstraction) meant to educate and provoke thought and conversation. Her quilts map diasporic histories, decorate spaces, and sometimes share unexpected visual language for important subjects.

Andrea was a contributing sewist for the 150th anniversary of White Rock Baptist Church. Her work has been displayed in exhibitions and at conferences. and was awarded an American Rescue Plan Act grant in 2024. She has donated quilts, participated in artist talks and has been interviewed in several online articles. Her quilted wall hangings have been purchased and her work commissioned for private collections. One of Andrea’s goals is to create a readily recognizable body of work. She also sees success as keeping African American textile traditions alive and thriving with improvisation, cultural stewardship and advocacy with the African American Quilt Circle of Durham.
